It is organized by the CABC committee and held in conjunction with the NY Art Book Fair, presented by Printed Matter.

For the 2011 conference, I organized and moderated a session titled, Focus on Latin America: Artists’ Books in Havana, Mexico City, and Caracas.

Session description:
This session addresses the cultural complexity of Latin America through a close look at three active artists’ book communities. Part critical analysis and part urban guide, speakers will share local perspectives on book arts through examples of works and discussion of key collaborations, organizations, and practices. From censored visual communication in Caracas and expanding networks of collaboration in Mexico City to underground dialogues in Havana, this panel will provide insights into emerging trends within these regions.

Participants include: Steven Daiber, Artist, Red Trillium Press; Sofía Olascoaga, Curator; and Victor Sira, Photographer/Faculty at the ICP-Bard MFA Program.

Often ephemeral by nature and meant to erode or change over time, earthworks and land-based installations present a challenge to the formal cataloging processes that museums use to express descriptive and administrative data about more stable sculpture pieces. Time, space, and the changing natural environment are essential factors in perceptions of land-based art. This digital collection represents our effort to account for these factors in the cataloging of three sample pieces: the New York City Waterfalls installations, the Storm King Wall, and The New York Earth Room.

It is our hope that these three examples, taken together, present some guidelines for the description and documentation of land-based art. We also hope to highlight and address the uncertain place of environmental art in the object-based museum collection, and give some guidance as to how these works may be preserved without physical disturbance of natural processes.
